About LanguageMap

LanguageMap is a map of the world's languages. It shows where each one is spoken and which family it belongs to.

What you can do

Data sources

The languages, their classification, endangerment status and location come from Glottolog. The Awakening status, for languages being revived after losing their last native speakers, comes from the Catalogue of Endangered Languages. Language codes follow ISO 639-3.

Sample sentences are Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, translated by the UN Human Rights Office and collected by the UDHR in XML project. Basic words and their pronunciation come from the ASJP Database (Wichmann, Holman, Brown, Dryer and Ran, version 21, CC BY 4.0).

Contributors

Many areas on the map were drawn by volunteers, so thank you to everyone who sent one in. Next to each name is the number of contributions accepted so far.
